Selecting A Fly Fishing Guide In Palm Beach

I will admit it, when I am out of town on vacation and I am looking to do some fishing I am unfamiliar with (trout for example) I book a guide. What I look for is someone who has grown up in the area and fished the majority of their life on the water I plan to fish. Lets be honest about Florida now. It is full of transplants from other states. That’s not to say they aren’t good fisherman or guides but if they don’t have the local area code in their phone number for instance, I’m probably going with the guy who grew up fishing the local waters with the local area code phone number. The difference between someone who has been fishing the waters for 20 vs 10years can be significant. 10 years is a long time. A lot can be learned in that time.

Ever since I was old enough to hold a cane pole tipped with a bread ball sitting under a bobber I have been fishing Florida. The only thing that made it better was sitting next to my grandfather at that moment. When you speak to your guide on the phone, is he friendly and informative or is he burned out? We all know the salty dog who has lost his passion when guiding became a job! Is he professional? Does he provide the licenses and equipment? Is he running at a bare minimum or is he truly running a business? Reviews speak wonders! You cant fake them and they tell you who you are dealing with. Does he have a high rating? Does he have a lot of reviews? Are the pictures he has posted mostly of him or are they of customers? Being a good fisherman and being a good guide are two totally different things. These are a few things I look at when booking and so should you!
